Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has a lot of fans and well-wishers across the globe for the love and dedication he shows towards the country. He has been time and again appreciated by the Prime Ministers of other countries as well for the sense of responsibility he has for India. But this time the beloved Prime Minister who turned 67 on 17 September, received a gift of 400 cheques of 68 paise each to remind him of something that’s very important.
THE 68 PAISE CHEQUES’ GIFT
The non-profit group Rayalaseema Saguneeti Sadhana Samiti (RSSS) from Andhra Pradesh sent the 400 cheques worth 68 paise – to remind the PM about the crisis of the farmers. RSSS is a group that works for drought-hit farmers in Rayalaseema.
RSSS Co-Convener, Yerva Raamachandra Reddy said,
We are sending 68 paise cheques as a token to draw your attention to our backwardness.
With the cheques, they wanted to convey to the PM that this is all they can offer him because the government continues to completely ignore Rayalaseema and its farmers who are struggling to make even a basic living there.
THE DROUGHT CRISIS
The Rayalaseema region consists of the districts of – Kurnool, Kadapa, Anantapur, and Chittoor. These districts have resources in abundance. However, the region is facing problem in the shortage of water. Rivers like Krishna and Penna which pass through the region is unable to solve the crisis of drought.
Both the Central and State governments promised many irrigation projects for the region but none of them have been completed. Consequently, the poor irrigation infrastructure resulted in poor water allocation for farmers.
The Group said,
Despite the AP State Bifurcation Act, 2015, which assured increased funds and allocation to complete the ongoing projects in a time-bound manner, the same has not led to any increased fund allocation.
The organization brought to the notice of the PM that due to lack of political influence, politicians show no interest in the region. A member of RSSS said,
Both Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu and opposition leader Jaganmohan Reddy are from Rayalaseema… Yet they are not focusing attention on the region because there are only 54 MLA seats here and the rest are in the coastal region. So they focus all their attention there.
Now, the ball is in PM’s court to solve the farmer’s issues.
