Regardless of which country you hail from, one person whom all cricket fans love commonly would be Mr 360°– AB De Villiers. Being the world’s best batsmen with a talented team as always, AbD’s South African Cricket team was one of the best team to claim the Champions title in the ongoing ICC tournament. But unfortunately, Proteas batsmen did not perform their best in the playoff matches against Pakistan and India. As a result of it, the team is no more in the run for the Champions Trophy 2017.
The South African team always performed better in bilateral series. When it comes to a big tournament, they seem to lose a bit and tend to get eliminated in the middle of the race especially in the knock-out matches. This scenario happened many times in the past and it happened so in this year’s ICC Champions Trophy 2017 as well.
With just 191 on the board against the strong Indian team, South Africa was destined to lose in the do-or-die match. Entering the tournament with a desperation to win the Title, an early exit was more than just a mere disappointment for the team. In particular, as a skipper who represents the team from the front, it was hard for AB De Villiers to overcome it.
Dejected ABD took to his Official Facebook handle and posted a video seeking sorry for the team’s dismal show. Disappointed with the team’s performance as a whole, in particular – the batting department, he was optimistic that the team can correct their errors and make it right. Further, ABD’s ultimate goal is to stay on as captain and take the Proteas to World Cup triumph in 2019.
In a recent interview, hailing about his dream ABD said,
My main goal is to get to the 2019 World Cup and I want to do everything possible to get there. We haven’t lifted a trophy before. So my focus has changed over the years, and seeing that we haven’t won one yet and looking at my age – I’m 33 now and probably not going to play for another 10 years – so my chances of winning a World Cup are becoming less and less. And there are a few things that stand in my way to get to that World Cup – it’s physical fitness, mental freshness, time with the family, time at home, things like that.
It was good that he spoke of the next tournament for the Proteas rather than stressing more on their mid-way exit in the current tournament.
In the video posted yesterday, Mr. 360° opined that England team is the favorite to win the ICC Champions Trophy this year. But, Pakistan that entered the tournament with the least rank shocked the hosts in the first semi-finals and qualified for the finals for the first time. In the second semis scheduled today at Birmingham, India will face off Bangladesh.
