Cycling is one of the most popular sports of all time and at any given time you can see cyclists in their lycra, intensely cycling from Point A to Point B, having a leisurely coffee afterwards and then cycling back to home. But imagine cycling Around The World that too in a record time – which is exactly what Mark Beaumont has just done.
ARTEMIS WORLD CYCLE
Mark’s journey is called The Artemis World Cycle and you could follow his every move – cycle – on the internet.
Mark wanted to emulate Frenchman Jules Verne and his ‘Around the World in Eighty Days’ and guess what, Mark did it in record time. Yes, Mark Beaumont surpassed the world record and nobody could be as ecstatic than himself.
Beaumont set off from Paris and after just 78 days, 14 hours and 14 minutes, he ended his Artemis World Cycle in Paris, cycling through the famous Arc de Triomphe on the Champs Elysee.
Mark’s wife Nicci and their two small daughters – Harriet and Willa greeted him with hundreds of fans.
While Beaumont may have looked fresh as he completed the Artemis World Cycle, he did say it was the most punishing experience and biggest challenge that he has ever had.
He rode on average 16 hours per day and was supported all around the world by fellow cyclists, social media messages, his family and a great backup team, covering over 18,000 miles in total (Check out an interactive map of his full route).
The Artemis World Cycle took him from Europe, through Russia and Mongolia, into China, and then Australia, New Zealand, Alaska, back to Europe and finally back to Paris.
TIRESOME, BUT WORTHFUL JOURNEY
It wasn’t all plain sailing or plain cycling. Mark took a few knocks along the way, his body underwent strain, shattered his sleep cycle, went through loneliness but at the end of the day, it was all worthwhile.
Beaumont did the cycle to raid money for Orkidstudio, a charity benefiting communities through Architecture, Construction, and Education.
Mark Beaumont is delighted to be back home and his daughters and wife are overjoyed to have him. His daughter Harriet said it took him a long time and we are sure Mark feels the same way!
