Globally, tons of plastic wastes are generated every day that makes its way into landfills. Plastic wastage continues to be a rising global problem as it is non-biodegradable and very harmful to the environment. And now few recycling plants in Tamil Nadu is on a mission to change this by giving new life to the waste plastic bottles. They have found a new way to turn plastic bottles into a piece of clothing.
Yes! You read it right, YOUR PLASTIC BOTTLES CAN NOW BECOME A NEW SHIRT.
TURNING WASTE PLASTIC BOTTLES TO CLOTHING
At first, the old and waste Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET) bottles will be filtered, sorted, shredded, cleaned and coloured. Once all the above-mentioned process is completed PET bottles will then be recycled to PET fibre.
The recycled PET fibre is then mixed with hosiery waste and spun together into yarn resulting in a new piece of clothing – which is later sold at regular prices in the market.
President of the All India Recycled Fibre and Yarn Association, BP Sultania initiated this useful process of turning plastic bottles into amazing garments in 1996.
Moreover, this method is beneficial for weavers too as plastic fibre eliminates their cost of dyeing yarn.
Hailing about the reduction in their expenses, Salvem, a weaver in Chennamalai said to The Hindu,
Earlier, we used to get yarn from the merchants and send it for dyeing. It would take two or three weeks. Now, we get coloured yarn. We can save Rs 10 for a kilo of yarn. There are 16 to 18 colours. It goes straight into weaving. There are no knots in the yarn, and so there is a smooth finish in the bedsheets.
If everyone employs this method, then it will be really helpful for the environment as well as textile industry.
However, these textile industries face a big hurdle due to the irregularity in the availability of the supplies throughout the year.
Speaking on the fluctuation of supplies, Krishna Kumar, owner of a recycling plant in Tiruppur, says,
It is challenging to get adequate quantities of PET bottles during winter. The government does not permit the import of waste PET bottles.
Though it sounds easier and simple, it is definitely now. And recycling a plastic waste is indeed a very major step in saving our environment and this is exactly what these forward-thinking people are doing.
