The sweetmaker, Nobin Chandra Das, is believed to have created the dessert in 1868.
It is made from round dumplings of chhena, an Indian cottage cheese, with semolina dough, and cooked in a light syrup and sugar.
Nobin Chandra Das’ great-great-grandson Dhiman Das said,
Nobin Chandra Das invented the sweet in 1868. He was trying to come up with a new sweet for a number of years before he came up with it. He never thought of trying for a patent on the sweet but taught confectioners how to prepare it.
It is everyone’s favorite dessert now and we are all supremely thankful to the Rosogolla creator!
ROSOGOLLA – THE MOVIE
The producers have chosen 2018 as the release date to coincide with the 150 year anniversary of the dessert.
The film is going to be called ‘Rosogolla’ and will be produced by Windows Productions. The director is Kolkata based, Pavel. He has spoken about the movie, what they are hoping to do and how it all came about.
Moreover, they’re hoping to launch new talents and are already keeping an eye out for actors and actresses.
The film will be about the Rosogolla creator, Nobin Chandra Das, but will also focus on how Indians think about the dessert, the huge integral part of it in Indians’ life, and of course, the recipe!
Besides, there has been some controversy lately over the dessert and ‘who’ it belonged to. While the concept of the movie came up two years ago, the recent controversy can only be good for marketing. And may well feature in the movie too.
Regardless, baking on the big screen and movies focusing on food always do well. 😋
