When we speak about The City of Love, Paris the first thought that comes to one’s mind would be the most popular iconic landmark in the world – The Eiffel Tower. But the City of Light is grueling with several terror incidents over the past two years. Therefore, in order to improve the security around the tower – a Bulletproof Wall of Glass will be constructed along the base of the Eiffel Tower.
THE EIFFEL TOWER GLASS WALL
The city’s Tourism Chief, Jean-Francois Martins said that the project would cost around 30 Million Euro ($36 Million) with work to be completed over nine months.
Authorities confirmed that the new wall will not disrupt visitors to the iconic tower. Glass bulletproof panels will be placed on the north and south axes facing the Champs de Mars and the Bridge of Jena.
In regards to the plan, Martins said earlier this year,
Currently, the perimeter is protected by unsightly temporary installations, which take the form of high-grade metal grids and modular buildings. It is useful in terms of security, but it spoils the monument.
THE REASON FOR THE WALL
In January 2015, Offices of Charlie Hebdo Magazine witnessed Jihadist attacks. This led to the deployment of some 7,000 personnel under an anti-terrorism operation known as Sentinelle, patrolling streets and guarding tourist hotspots.
The ‘wall’ project is also a result of a series of Jihadist attacks in the French capital over the past two years which killed nearly 200 people. Consequently, this also led to the decline of the number of visitors last year.
Other incidents include a 19-year-old former psychiatric patient leaping over a security barrier at the tower last month wielding a knife saying he wanted to attack a soldier.
Moreover, Paris hosts Olympics 2024. So, security concerns during that period will definitely be the biggest challenge to the city.
The Eiffel Tower has 6-7 Million visitors a year. In fact, it already has a permanent police patrol. However, Paris councilors voted in March to increase security at the monument further because of high terrorist threat.
Well, with all the threats in mind, the plan to construct a glass wall is certainly the best decision.
