Dutchman Rudy van Buren used to dream about becoming a sports car racer. From the age of 8, he raced go-karts and actually had great talent. Van Buren was serious about his go-kart racing and in 2003, he was the Dutch Junior Champion.
Sadly, ‘real life’ interfered, money was short, reality set in and Rudy moved from racing to an office job. He quit go-karts at the age of 16, finished his studies and became a sales manager.
MCLAREN FORMULA ONE SIMULATOR DRIVER
Rudy van Buren continued to race, albeit online, with secret dreams of one day perhaps going back to racing.
This week Van Buren’s dreams were realized, even though in a slightly different way. He is the newly crowned winner of an online eSports competition and the prize – he has become the McLaren Formula One simulator driver.
It’s the story of a dream come true!

WORLD’S FASTEST GAMER COMPETITION
The competition is the brainchild of Darren Cox who managed to take gamers from behind the computer or television screen to a real racetrack. The competition is online and includes virtual racing.
It’s all about becoming the ‘World’s Fastest Gamer’. There were over 30,000 entrants and the final showdown was between dutch sales manager Van Buren and another Dutch student, Freek Schothorst.

The newly crowned Mclaren Formula One simulator driver could not be more delighted. He came to the McLaren Technology Centre for the first time a week ago and now he leaves as an employee. And having a job at McLaren is a fantastic career opportunity, as well as being exciting and, well, fast!

Part of Van Buren’s new job will be to help McLaren develop their new car, using his talent and skills from virtual racing. In fact, McLaren understands the importance of virtual racing and sees it as a huge growth area. Virtual simulations can improve the real, with everything tested online before it becomes reality.
The finalists came from Denmark, France, Britain and of course Holland. Over ten million people went online and looked at the competition.
It was Van Buren’s dream to get back to the racetrack and now, he’s the new McLaren Formula One simulator driver and couldn’t be more delighted.
