Cricketers lives are very often public. Their every move is on camera and lately, their every word is on camera too. Former Indian Cricket Captain Sourav Ganguly was always under scrutiny not just for his skills as both captain and batsman, but also for his quick temper and his arguments with umpires, coaches, and the opposition.
One thing about Ganguly that has not been so public was his love life. Sourav Ganguly and Dona Roya have been together for twenty years and it’s been romance and roses ever since they met.
DADA’S DARING LOVE STORY
Sourav and Dona (classical dancer) lived in the same neighborhood and they’d bump in the street, often on Ganguly’s way to play football. They would say hello to one another but both were a bit shy to get beyond that. Their first proper interaction was at a Badminton game – it had to be over the sport of course – when Dona threw back the shuttlecock that had landed near her home.
Later, whenever the shuttlecock fell on Dona’s compound, she was excited to return it as she would get a chance to see Sourav.
After that, it was plain sailing. Sourav Ganguly and Dona Roya had their first date at a Chinese restaurant where Dona was amazed at Sourav’s appetite. He was a sportsman, after all, he needed to carbo load! 😀
BATTLING ALL THE ODDS
Love affairs are not just about the couple but also the family. There were tricky moments as Dona’s father Sanjeev initially opposed the relationship and gave both Sourav and his own daughter a hard time. Sanjeev had issues with Sourav’s father, dating way back, and he was unsure about the relationship.
After facing huge resistance from both sides of their family, Sourav eloped and married his childhood sweetheart Dona. Later, both the families reconciled and arranged a formal wedding on 1st February 1997.
It’s been Twenty years since their marriage, Sourav and Dona are still happy and content together. They also have a lovely daughter, Sana Ganguly and she completes their perfect family.
It’s a real love story, two young people falling in love, battling the odds and getting married. One went on to become India’s most loved and popular cricket players but Ganguly still remained loyal, loving and romantic throughout.
Sport and romance don’t often go together but in this instance, they are a perfect match. It’s a wonderful win, all round, for Indian sport and of course, Ganguly and his gorgeous wife Dona.
